Flying Into Aspen: What to Know About ASE

FBO: Atlantic Aviation is the sole fixed-base operator at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) — all general-aviation handling, fuel, and ramp services go through them.

Runway & elevation: ASE has a single runway (15/33), 8,006 ft long, at 7,820 ft elevation. The high-altitude field and steep terrain approach are why both aircraft and crews must be qualified for Aspen.

Night curfew: ASE enforces a firm curfew — no departures after 10:30 PM, all arrivals on the ground by 11:00 PM, and the airport is closed 11:00 PM–7:00 AM. Older, louder (Stage I) aircraft are prohibited outright. Arrival timing matters here.

Wingspan limit: Aircraft are capped at a 95-foot wingspan under Pitkin County code, which rules out the largest ultra-long-range jets (see below).

Ramp & parking: Ramp and hangar space is limited and managed first-come by Atlantic Aviation — during Christmas, New Year’s, and X Games weeks it fills up fast. Aspen does not use a formal PPR or slot-reservation system; the real constraints are the curfew, the wingspan limit, and ramp availability. We confirm parking for your specific tail before committing.

Alternates: When weather or aircraft size rules out ASE, the usual alternates are Eagle County (EGE), about 68 miles / 90 minutes by road, and Rifle (RIL), about 61 miles. EGE has no wingspan limit and accepts heavy jets.

Which Jets Can Land at Aspen

Aspen’s altitude, short runway, and 95-foot wingspan limit mean not every jet qualifies. What routinely operates into ASE:

  • Light & midsize: Citation CJ3, Citation XLS/XLS+, Citation Latitude, Phenom 300, Learjet 75, Hawker 800XP, Citation Sovereign.
  • Super-midsize (the practical ceiling for most Aspen trips): Challenger 350/3500, Gulfstream G280, Praetor 600, Citation Longitude.
  • Not permitted: the largest ultra-long-range jets — Gulfstream G650/G700, Bombardier Global 7500 — exceed the 95-foot wingspan limit and cannot land at ASE. For those aircraft we route through Eagle County (EGE) with a ground transfer into Aspen.

Semi-Private Flights to Aspen

There’s no scheduled semi-private (per-seat) jet carrier flying directly into Aspen today. If you’re after a shared option, the realistic paths are a shared or per-seat charter we can arrange on popular routes, or flying semi-private into Eagle County (EGE) and transferring by car (about 90 minutes). Tell us your origin and dates and we’ll lay out the per-seat versus whole-aircraft tradeoff.

Additionally, private flights offer an elevated level of comfort and privacy, providing a serene environment to relax or conduct business. Passengers can enjoy personalized services tailored to their preferences, from catering to seating arrangements. Furthermore, flying private means direct flights to the destination, eliminating layovers and reducing travel time significantly. The convenience of arriving at smaller, less crowded terminals also results in expedited security and customs processes, allowing travelers to make the most of their time in Aspen. All these factors contribute to a seamless and luxurious travel experience, making flying private a preferred choice for many.

How Does Weather Affect Private Jets Flying In and Out of Aspen?

Weather conditions play a significant role in the operations of private jets flying in and out of Aspen. The mountainous region is known for its unpredictable weather patterns, which can impact flight schedules and safety. Pilots and flight operators take into account various factors such as wind speed, visibility, and precipitation when planning flights. Advanced technology and communication systems are employed to monitor real-time weather updates, allowing for informed decision-making. In some cases, adverse weather conditions may lead to delays or rerouting to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. However, private jets have the advantage of being more agile and capable of operating in a wider range of conditions compared to larger commercial aircraft. This flexibility often allows for adjustments in flight plans to accommodate changing weather conditions, minimizing disruptions to the travel itinerary. It’s always advisable for passengers to stay in contact with their charter service for the latest updates regarding their flight status.

Can Pets Travel on Private Jets to Aspen?

Yes, pets are generally welcome to travel on private jets to Aspen, making it a convenient option for pet owners. Many private jet services provide pet-friendly amenities, such as comfortable bedding and in-flight meals, to cater to the needs of pets. It’s important for pet owners to communicate their requirements to the charter company in advance, so appropriate arrangements can be made. Additionally, passengers should ensure that their pets have the necessary travel documentation, such as health certificates and vaccination records, as required by local regulations. Traveling with pets on private jets allows for a more personalized and stress-free experience, ensuring that both the owners and their pets enjoy the journey.

What Are the Luggage Restrictions for Private Jet Flights to Aspen?

This includes informing the company about any oversized items such as ski equipment, which is common for travelers heading to Aspen. Unlike commercial flights, private jets do not have strict weight limits or baggage fees, providing a more relaxed and accommodating travel experience. However, it is still important to consider the aircraft’s weight and balance limitations to ensure a safe flight. By coordinating with the charter service in advance, travelers can enjoy a hassle-free experience when it comes to managing their luggage on private jet flights to Aspen.
