Rio de Janeiro Airports for Private Jets (GIG & SDU)

Rio has two very different airports for private aviation. The right one depends on your aircraft size and where you’re staying.

Galeão – Rio de Janeiro/Antonio Carlos Jobim International (GIG / SBGL)

Rio’s main international gateway, on Governador Island ~20 km north of the center. Two long runways (the main is ~4,000 m / 13,123 ft) handle everything up to ultra-long-range and heavy jets, so all intercontinental arrivals and larger-cabin aircraft use GIG. Full customs and immigration for international flights are here. Dedicated executive-aviation handling and FBO services operate on the field; we confirm the FBO and slot with your trip. Transfer to the South Zone (Copacabana/Ipanema) is roughly 40–60 minutes depending on traffic.

Santos Dumont (SDU / SBRJ)

The in-city airport on Guanabara Bay, right beside downtown — a 10–15 minute drive to Copacabana. Its single main runway is short (~1,320 m / 4,330 ft) with a bay on both ends, so it is limited to light and some midsize jets; heavy and most super-midsize aircraft cannot operate here and use Galeão instead. SDU has slot and operating restrictions and historically prioritizes domestic traffic, so international private flights typically clear at GIG first, then reposition to SDU or arrive domestically. When your aircraft and routing allow it, SDU is the fastest way into the city.

Customs, immigration & permits

International arrivals clear customs and immigration at Galeão. Brazil requires advance landing/overflight permits for non-scheduled (charter) operations, arranged before departure — we handle the permit, slots, and FBO coordination as part of the trip.

Indicative one-way ranges — not quotes. Built from current market charter data (November 2026). Actual pricing varies by aircraft, routing, permits, and availability. Rio is a long-haul trip from the US, so most routes need a super-midsize or heavy jet, sometimes with a fuel stop.

Aircraft Options for Rio

Rio is a long-haul destination from North America, so the right aircraft depends mostly on range. Short regional legs (São Paulo, Buenos Aires) open up light and midsize jets; US nonstops need a heavy or ultra-long-range cabin.

FAQs

How much does a private jet to Rio cost?

Indicative one-way ranges: Miami–Rio about $95,000–$140,000 on a long-range heavy jet; New York–Rio about $110,000–$160,000 on an ultra-long-range jet; Buenos Aires–Rio about $26,000–$42,000; and the São Paulo (GRU) to Santos Dumont (SDU) hop from about $8,000 on a light jet. Market estimates, not quotes.

Can a private jet land at Santos Dumont (SDU)?

Yes, but only light and some midsize jets — Santos Dumont’s main runway is short (~1,320 m / 4,330 ft) with water at both ends, so heavy and most super-midsize aircraft can’t use it and go to Galeão (GIG) instead. SDU also has slot limits, and international flights usually clear customs at GIG first, then reposition to SDU.

Do US citizens need a visa for Brazil?

Yes. As of 2025 Brazil again requires US, Canadian, and Australian citizens to hold a visa, issued as an electronic visa (e-Visa) applied for online before travel — there is no visa on arrival. A passport valid for your stay is also required. Apply well ahead of your trip; we’ll remind you and handle the Brazilian landing permits on the aircraft side.

How long is the flight from Miami to Rio?

About 8 hours 30 minutes nonstop on a long-range heavy jet. From New York it’s roughly 9h45 on an ultra-long-range aircraft; shorter-range jets need a technical fuel stop en route.

Which airport should I fly into for Rio?

Galeão (GIG) for any international or larger-cabin flight — it has the long runways and full customs. Santos Dumont (SDU) is far closer to Copacabana and Ipanema and is ideal for light-jet hops from São Paulo or within Brazil. We match the airport to your aircraft and where you’re staying.
