Founded in 1670 and named after King Charles II of England, Charleston remained among the 10 largest cities in the country through the 1840 census.

Before the Revolutionary War, it quickly became an important part of the British colonization of America. Especially important to the growth of the new colony was Charleston’s standing as a crucial part of the slave trade industry. Historians estimate that, during the 18th century, approximately half of all slaves brought to America came in through Charleston.

Following the Civil War, freed blacks from the surrounding rural areas flocked into Charleston, ballooning the city’s population. After Reconstruction, several violent clashes between black and white citizens marred the city’s reputation.

Continually ranked as the “best city in the world” by Travel + Leisure Magazine, the coastal city of Charleston, S.C., has the best of both a seaside town and a small cultural destination.

Modern Charleston has a humid subtropical climate marked by mild winters, hot, humid summers, and significant rainfall throughout the year. 

The city is similar to a lot of older Southern cities in that its buildings are a mixture of modern creations and old, plantation-era architecture.
